Frequently Asked Questions
What is Microblading? +
Microblading is the process of manually “drawing” individual hair strokes with a handheld tool called a Microblade instead of the traditional tattoo machine. It’s a semi-permanent technique which requires an artist to manually insert pigment into the epidermis (most shallow layer of skin). You won’t even be able to tell which hair is your own!
What is the difference between Microblading, Shading/Powder Ombre, and Combination Brows? +
Do not worry about which style best suits you or overthink this on your own. This is a mandatory step for you and your artist to figure out together before the actual procedure. Your artist will take a look at your brows’ current condition and suggest the best style for you.
The Microblading technique creates hair strokes only, while Powder Ombre doesn’t have any hair strokes. Rather, it has a powder effect.
What is the difference between Microblading and tattoo brows? +
This is one of the most frequently asked questions! Many clients think Microblading is a tattoo, and I am here to clarify they are not the same. Microblading is semi-permanent and Tattoo is permanent, which requires a different tool.
The Microblading technique requires a very skilled artist precisely drawing each line vs. Eyebrow tattoo, in which the artist uses a machine.
Microblading hair strokes stay on the shallow layer of the skin and will fade over time (1-3 years). Brow tattoo ink goes deeper into the skin & stays on much longer, but changes color over time.
Microblading ink stays true to color while Tattoo changes color over time.
Microblading is more natural than brow tattoo.
Microblading healing is much shorter (7 days) than tattoo (2 weeks). Immediately after the procedure, Microbladed brows experience no downtime or “sharpie” brow look, very natural and hair-like, whereas tattooed brows can appear very dark and solid.
How long does Microblading last? +
Depends on your skin. The dryer it is, the longer it lasts, and vice versa. So anywhere between 1-2 years.
Does it hurt? +
Many clients doze off and take a nap during the procedure! There will be continuous numbing throughout the procedure. No pain at all for many, and a little stinging for some. We apply numbing cream before and during the procedure to ensure no pain is felt during the process.
How long is the appointment? +
1.5 - 2 hours
What is the healing process like, how long is healing? +
You will experience some itchiness in the beginning, then day 3-7 will be very dark. Peeling starts anywhere from day 5-9. Healing varies for different skin types. No need to hide! Entire process takes 2 weeks.
Any down time? +
Immediately after the procedure, there will be NO down time. No redness, swelling or bleeding. Around day 5-9, during the healing stages, you may or may not experience peeling depending on the skin you have.
Swell/redness or hiding? +
No swelling or redness, and especially no need to hide from work or the public! The majority of clients report they cannot tell what’s been done, and some husbands don’t even notice!
Will I look like I have sharpie brows for a week? +
No. Sharpie brows only happen with tattooed brows, not with microblading. Learn more about the difference between Microblading and Brow Tattoo above in the FAQ section.
Do I need to buy ointments? +
No need to buy any, we provide them here, but no ointment is needed if you Microblade with Moai Beauty.
When should I get a touch up? +
Everyone varies! Generally 8 months - 2 years. You should get a touch up when you have to fill them in again and that is very different for everyone. Some prefer darker color over others, and may have to come back more frequently to maintain the darkness.
What can I do to keep them last longer? +
Because pigment is under the shallow layer of the skin, anything that encourages your skin to peel or regenerate new skin will make Microblading fade faster. Exfoliation, facial laser, retinol, sun exposure, tanning or anything that helps with skin regeneration are all factors that could lead to fading. Applying sunscreen over your brows is very important.
How do you choose a shape for me? +
Just like our DNA, every person's set of brows and facial structure is unique. As an artist with makeup background, we are able to see and envision what type of brows suit our client's face shape. On the technical side, we use my Phi brow measurement tools to make sure the brows are as symmetrical as possible.
How do you pick the best color? +
For first-timers, if you are trying to have natural looking brows, the color should match your actual brow hair (the roots of your hair), not your brow pencil color or the color in which you dyed your hair. Makeup pigment on the outside of your skin is very different than pigment that will go inside of your skin. We examine the color/warmth of your skin, hair, brow hair color and eye color, before making a final decision.
How do I make the appointment? +
The easiest way to make an appointment is to go on our website and click “Booking”. You will see our availability and can book accordingly. You can also email or give us a call. Feel free to leave a voicemail if no one picks up. Your messages will be answered within 2-3 days.
Am I a good candidate? +
For previously Microbladed friends, it’s best to schedule an in-person free consultation or a FaceTime session to take a look to make sure we can deliver what you are looking for. No over promising and under delivering at Moai Beauty!
Should I get microbladed before or after botox/laser treatments? +
We recommend having your microblading procedure done one month before/after your botox/laser treatment.
I have a scar on my brows, can Microblading cover it? +
It depends on the size of the scar. In general, yes, small scars could be covered.
Are you adding real hair in the brows? +
No, real hair is being added into the brows. All are drawn on with a Microblade by the artist.
Do I still have to draw my brows everyday after Microblading? +
Generally speaking, no. But if your brow style is extremely dark, then yes, drawing brows is needed.
